Students for Sustainability at the University of Arizona

Students for Sustainability at the University of Arizona, student government program at the University of Arizona

Mission: Students for Sustainability is an Associated Students of the University of Arizona (ASUA) student government program that works to engage the student body in order to cultivate environmental literacy from many perspectives. Students for Sustainability works to do this through the ASUA model of empowering student leaders, advancing social justice and equality, and in pursuing institutionalized sustainability at the University of Arizona and within the Tucson community.

Courtney Pijanowski majored in Environmental Science.

This was my first semester being a part of Students for Sustainability and I have enjoyed every minute of it. I have learned so much throughout the semester and gained many important connections. It is amazing to work with people that share the same passions as you.

I was a member of the Greeks Think Green committee, which focuses on implementing composting and recycling in all of the Greek houses on campus. We have convinced several sororities to implement recycling in their houses and we are still working on implementing composting in each house.

Todd Stone majored in Environmental Science with an emphasis on Biology.

I partnered with the University of Arizona’s Students for Sustainability program. I specifically worked with their Greening the Game Committee and our goal was to make the UA’s sporting events more sustainable by implementing recycling, compost and waste reduction methods in the stadiums.

Some of my favorite experiences included working Spring Fling, getting to go behind-the-scenes at the sporting events, and becoming a critical part of creating a sustainable campus.

Some of my responsibilities included: providing education experiences at sporting events, creating a fun atmosphere for guests at the events to learn, separating recycling and compostable materials for waste bins, promoting Greening the Game efforts to vendors at Sporting Events and working directly with Facilities Management to reach our goals.

Women's Initiative for Leadership in the Outdoors at the University of Arizona

Women's Initiative for Leadership in the Outdoors (WILO), outdoor recreation programming

Mission: The Women’s Initiative for Leadership in the Outdoors (WILO) in Campus Recreation is a semester-long program built to create a welcoming environment for women to learn introductory outdoor skills.

Hannah Riedemann majored in Environmental Science Major with an emphasis in Soil, Water, and Air and minored in Creative Writing Minor with an emphasis in Poetry.

My responsibilities as an intern for this organization spanned a lot of different things, from helping with training before the program, the facilitation of workshops, implementation of the curriculum, and assisting with marketing.

My favorite thing was helping other women gain confidence in themselves and growing through difficult situations together. The biggest lesson I learned from this program was the importance of learning from experience - making mistakes, learning, and trying again.
