Explore summer internship opportunities

Angel A. Medina majored in Environmental Science.

I worked as a wildlife biologist intern for the Arizona Game and Fish department. I stayed in Ajo, Arizona with two other interns, one from University of Arizona and another from Arizona State University.

My responsibility was to take care of Sonoran Pronghorn Antelope on the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge and my internship consisted of many different tasks that varied from day to day.

Some of those tasks included: Waking up at 3:30 a.m. and preparing materials such as water and gas for the day, splitting up at the pens for the animals and taking notes on behaviours and pump water/begin feeding. At the end of the day we would look at the camera cards and also look over the day’s work.

Overall the experience was incredibly rewarding and I feel so grateful to have participated and worked with the Arizona Game and Fish Department.

Pima County Parks and Recreation

Pima County Parks and Recreation, local government agency near Tucson

Mission: To protect and enhance the parks of Pima County, Arizona: this includes funding park improvements, the acquisition of parklands, and the enhancement and enlargement of recreation programs.

Mely Bohlman majored in Environmental Science and Spanish/Portuguese.

I was an intern for Pima County Parks and Recreation, under Kerry Baldwin, Division Manager. I applied for the internship after hearing his talk about outreach and environmental education given in my class ENVS 195a, Careers in Environmental Science.

My responsibility throughout the semester was to archive information about historical ranches and the history of Tucson and neighboring counties. I obtained info from brochures that Kerry created for the community. I also worked at the Arizona Historical Society Library and the UA Special Collections, gathering info about past and present ranches and people.

Since Pima Parks and Recreation did not have knowledge of this information before I interned, my work served as a foundation for future projects related to these topics. My internship for the university translated into a summer job, where I archived more extensively and compiled more sources for Kerry. I was very pleased to work with Pima Parks and Recreation and I am looking forward to working for them again this summer.
