A newly-designed application partially developed by the University of Arizona called 'Ag Water' is being used to aid growers on food safety issues. This app gives the user an idea of whether or not a water source is safe to use to grow produce. Environmental Science water quality specialist Channah Rock was a major contributor in this project
James Walworth is finding out more about pecan trees and the fertilizers that would benefit these plants - Arizona growers are also benefiting from the newly found information and research. His studies are focused on the zinc levels in pecan trees.
Three grants equaling $400,000 will be given to UA researchers, including Kelly Bright, to study E. Coli strains found in irrigation water used for food crops.

Graduate student Victoria Obergh works with water samples to find where antibiotic-resistant bacteria live. The Department of Environmental Science student found many of these contaminated samples in local bodies of water and continues to research the cause of this.
The University of Arizona partnered with the University of Washington to research the relationship between certain background odors and pollinators, like moths. It was discovered that car and truck exhaust fumes also cause a problems for moths, covering up a flower's scent and inhibiting their ability to find certain plants. Leif Abrell assisted in the study, using mass spectrometry for the first time to provide information to explain the olfactory environment.
A study led by Kelly Bright concludes that a substance in oregano oil (the essence that gives pizza its distinct flavor and scent) can be helpful in curbing Norovirus, which is known as the "winter vomiting disease" and a very common food-borne illness.
The University of Arizona is partnering with Pima County to establish the Water and Energy Sustainable Technology Laboratories at Pima County's new Water Reclamation Campus. The building will be located on a new 23,000-square-foot plot of laboratory land.
Charles Gerba together with Loma Linda University in California discovered that reusable grocery bags are a serious threat to humans, many \carrying diseases like E. coli. The report explained that 97% of reusable bag owners do not regularly bleach and/or wash them. "With this knowledge, people will be in a better position to protect their health and that of their children," says Gerba.
